Never punish an animal after it has listened to you. If you do, you have just taught that animal to listen means getting punished. I.E. If your Retriever does not come to you after repeatedly being called, your first instinct would be to punish him when he finally comes. If you do this, you will reinforce the concept to the dog that listening means getting punished. After all, in the dogs mind, he listened to you and you punished him.

Remember, dogs are not human and can only remember the last thing they did. If you punish him and he remembers heeling to you then odds are you will have trouble getting your hunting buddy to heel the next time.
